El Chaltén town is located about 125 mi (200 km) from the El Calafate international airport and can only be accessed by land, traveling along the scenic National Route 40 and Provincial Route 41. All routes are paved and in very good condition, so the trip takes approximately 3 hours.
The daily bus service between El Calafate and El Chaltén operates all year round, with at least two daily frequencies (departure and return) in the morning and afternoon. During the tourist season (from October to April) several additional frequencies are added.
Some transportation companies offer connections to other destinations northward on Route 40 (such as Perito Moreno, Los Antiguos, Bariloche, etc.) or to Chile towards the South (Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, etc.). Ask for further information to any of the bus companies listed below.
