The Water

Patagonia’s western region is a water wonderland! It’s home to some of the world’s most generous reservoirs of drinking water. Imagine this: massive ice sheets, glaciers, huge lakes, fjords, rivers, waterfalls, streams, and countless waterways all flowing together. It’s like a giant water system that’s been there for millions of years.

Glacial origin

The Andes mountains are a magical place, especially during the rainy and snowy season. It’s like stepping back in time when you visit these high peaks. You’ll find ancient ice fields and glaciers, frozen remnants of the last great glaciation. It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience!.

Imagine the massive ice caps that once covered the Earth, dominating the landscapes during the glacial era. These ancient ice caps are just a tiny fraction of the enormous ice sheets that once existed, reaching their peak around 18,000 years ago.

In Los Glaciares National Park, the water that comes from the glaciers starts in the Southern Ice Field and flows through a single path: the Santa Cruz River. This river travels across the vast, open plain of Santa Cruz province until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean.

The ice field is a giant water tank that gives us plenty of H2O!

Remember, everyone’s role is to keep our water clean. Let’s all do our part to protect the El Chaltén area’s water supply.

Water care

Water will be your constant companion on your adventures. You’ll cross rivers and streams, explore lakes and lagoons, and marvel at glaciers and waterfalls. And guess what? You’ll always find it in its purest form, refreshing you with every sip from streams and springs.

Remember, everyone’s got a role to play in keeping our water clean. So, when you’re out and about, whether you’re having a picnic or camping, please don’t wash your dishes, take a dip in the river, or do your business near a waterway. Just look around, and you’ll always find a river, lagoon, or stream nearby.

When you get to El Chaltén, make sure to stop by the National Park Information Center. They’ll give you all the info you need to take care of this beautiful natural place.
