Kayaking on Lago del Desierto

An activity in the Lago Del Desierto area, for kayak and water lovers.

You must bear in mind that to travel from El Chaltén to Lago del Desierto you need at least 2 hours because the road is gravel. If you do not have your own vehicle, the operator offers an option with transfers (round trip), which leaves from El Chaltén at 10:00 am (arriving at Lago del Desierto at 12:00 pm). The return bus from Lago del Desierto leaves at 4:00 pm and arrives in El Chaltén at 5:30 pm.

The starting point of this excursion is Punta Sur of Lago del Desierto. You can hire a transfer from El Chaltén with departure times at 9.30 in the morning and at 12 noon.

At 11:30 a.m. the kayak guide will be waiting for you at the lake and will give you a talk on paddling technique, describing the route to be followed and the safety measures during the activity. After that you will put on your paddling equipment and everything is ready to hit the water!

At 12:00 noon, once in the water, the rowing begins towards the Bahía Tranquila, which requires approximately 40 minutes and in which there are some stops to rest, appreciate the views of the Huemul and Vespignani glaciers and chat about the Lake and its environment.

Bahía Tranquila is a beautiful corner protected from the wind, surrounded by the forest and with crystal clear water of little depth; it is the perfect place to get off and have a rest for 20 minutes to recharge energy.

After the break the rowing takes us back to the starting point. Once in Punta Sur, all the equipment is left, before returning by minibus to El Chaltén.

The excursion lasts 2.30 hours, and with the transfer ends in El Chaltén at approximately 5:30 p.m.
